Witch of November
Witch of November (2017-present), is a photographic diary that explores some of the more notable nautical disasters that have witnessed the brutal force of mother nature on Lake Michigan during the month of November.
After scouring old articles and weather data, I compiled a list of ships that made their final voyage due to ”The Witch’s” legendary and unpredictable weather.. With the list in hand, I tried to find the exact moment, location, and weather conditions for each of these vessel’s final moments. In many cases, these ships became a grave for the brave men who worked them. I recorded the weather conditions during each exposure which correlates with each ships final moments to compare present weather with that of the past. This project is not only a documentation of tragic moments in time, but it is also one to pay respects to those who lost their lives, and to the families who suffered the ultimate loss.
All the images were made with a single exposure of large format 5x7 film. Each negative was contact printed, and split toned with Sepia and Selenium on silver gelatin 8x10 fiber-base paper. .
